It’s that time of the school year, when the kids have started settling in to their classes and routines and after school games. This week an unfortunate accident happen to our patient – he broke his permanent front tooth when playing. Almost every year, we see a few accidents such as these. What is more unfortunate is that some of these are totally avoidable with a sports mouth-guard – which is not the same as a night guard.

The sports mouth is an appliance that is used to protect people’s teeth from being damaged due to a hit to the face or a fall. A sports mouth-guard is usually made with a thicker material and it is made to extend to cover the entire jaw, even the gum tissue so that the entire mouth can be protected from the impact of a fall or hit. While a night guard may be made from durable hard acrylic plastic to withstand grinding over a long period of time, a sport mouth-guard is usually made from a softer material that can absorb the force of sudden impact. There are some over the counter mouth-guards which do not fit as well as the professionally made sports mouth guard, and because of the ill fit , it may not be as protective during the course of an impact. Hence we do recommend a professional mouth guard to prevent or reduce the chances of huge impact to the mouth . Please insist on your kids wearing them for most contact sports. Remember – Prevention is the key. Dr Jay and her team at Serene Dentistry is working on this case, and will update you soon on the progress.
